I am planning on writing a BTB article " The art of Breeding a Bargain". In the article I am going to look at different methods of spending points. Is there an advantage to using the full 120 points? 30 pointer breeding? Spend most on a dam sire, spend most on the dams dam sire. I am not asking you to reveal your secrets per say but any opinions you have would make a nice edition to the article. Perhaps there is enough to create a small series of articles.
I am not going to mention specific sires but for sure sire lines, crosses and theories. If you want to chip in just email me or you can post here.

I have had decent success with my 30 pointers, disproportionately so. My knowledge of the SAf sires is an advantage as I can generally tell when a 10 point should actually have a decent sim rating, relatively speaking. The same applies to more expensive bargains too. For the 10 pointers, I will sometimes have to take a chance of sires I've never heard of, but I'll usually do some superficial internet research to try to find out if there is some potential for success.
I try to reserve the top tier SAf stallion shares (the top 5 or so) for non-bargains, even if they qualify, and then choose the best bargain from the netx 10 or so when looking for a sire. For DS, I've gravitated lately towards recently retired stallions that are going cheaply, but active 2nd tier sires work too. In the DDS spot I'll usually go for old sires as they can be overlooked by many. I only have a handful of SAf options in this spot as the older sires are not properly rated, so I'll often look for more international big name stallions that are going cheap. These can be difficulty to judge though, without sim DDS stats to help.

I have different experience. Usually, I have more luck with bargains near the limit price. I don't want to tell much of my strategy..but usually, good dam-sire is one of the keys. Same as dragnil, I do research on the breeding sites and looking for hopeful unused ones. Also, I try to combine lines, which work in sim (but of course with less known sires). Also, I have couple of sires, which have done good job for me in the past...and I repeat them in the pedigree from time to time.

I haven't had the success that some of the other members have had, but one of my favorite strategies is looking at full brothers to great race horses. I especially love finding full brothers or even half brothers to great horses that never made it to the breeding shed (filly, gelding, injury, etc.) Sires like JUST FOR SPEIGHT (1/2 to Lost In The Fog), OLD CHAPEL (full brother to the amazing steeplechase gelding McDynamo), and ANODIN (full brother to Champion filly Goldikova).
He's not a bargain, but my favorite horse in real life is Dreaming of Anna and I love her full brother LEWIS MICHAEL. Her first son at stud FAST ANNA is a freshman sire this year, and I'm excited to see what he does, both in the sim and in real life. I also really like the unraced STAR CAT just because of his dam-Ashado.
I may like these sires better in real life than in the sim though. They haven't done much for me.
